JONAHCOLOMA
"Stilled Life" is a collection of graphic illustrations that delves into the theme of involuntary confinement, using flat and somewhat light illustration techniques as an antithesis to the heavy, restrictive nature of the subject matter. The objects, suspended and immobilized by piercing wires, are rendered with clean lines and minimal shading, creating a stark contrast between the simplicity of the visuals and the complexity of the emotions they convey. This use of lightness and flatness in the design contrasts with the tension of the entrapment, heightening the feeling of suffocation despite the seemingly effortless aesthetic. The piercing wires, sharp and unforgiving, serve as a visual reminder of the invisible forces that bind the objects, reflecting how external circumstances can trap us, yet the soft and unassuming illustration style serves to amplify the unsettling nature of being controlled without choice. The work speaks to the paradox of stillness imposed, exploring the delicate balance between outward simplicity and the deeper emotional weight carried within.
